[Exclusive Reveal] Director Young Man Kang’s New Feature Film “Prayer: Vincent van Gogh”... A South Korea-France-US Co-production
Filmed entirely on location in France, tracing the footsteps of painter Van Gogh; features French actors and French-language dialogue.
- Reporter Park Jeong-dae
*Prayer: Vincent van Gogh*... Scheduled for release in the second half of 2027.
Director Young Man Kang, who has been active internationally with a base in Los Angeles, has completed the feature film *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh*, a co-production between France, the US, and South Korea. With a runtime of approximately 70 minutes, the film was shot entirely on location in France, featuring French actors and French-language dialogue. It is a road movie that traces Van Gogh’s life and art, traveling from locations such as Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and Marseille to Paris and Auvers-sur-Oise. The following text is an exclusive summary provided to this publication by a representative from the Korean production company, Buil Contents.
What is *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* about? ... Retracing the paths Van Gogh walked!
Jean-Michel Albert of Tam Tam Stories served as the main producer in France, while CEO Ko Ha-jeong and Art Director Professor Ko Yi of Buil Contents represented the Korean team. Director Young Man Kang handled both directing and production duties from the US. It is an international co-production project involving filmmakers and artists from South Korea, France, and the United States. The lead roles are played by French actors Anysia Deprele and Antoine Paul.
Another protagonist of *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* is the landscape of France itself. The film’s journey spans locations from Marseille, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the south to Paris, Montmartre, and Auvers-sur-Oise in the north.
For about a month, the film crew traveled to and filmed in the actual locations where Vincent van Gogh lived and painted, as well as the surrounding areas. Crucially, the production team did not aim merely to capture "tourist spots visited by Van Gogh"; their goal was to recreate—within the film’s visuals—the light, colors, and nature of southern France exactly as Van Gogh had once seen them.
The timing of the shoot was carefully planned with this in mind. Filming was scheduled to coincide with the moments when wheat fields turned a deep golden hue before the harvest, when sunflowers were in full bloom, and when lavender bathed the fields of Provence in purple. However, as local temperatures rose earlier than anticipated, the harvest began about a week ahead of schedule in some areas; by the time the crew arrived to scout locations, harvesting had already commenced in some wheat fields. The production team quickly adjusted their schedule to capture the golden wheat fields, sunflowers, and lavender landscapes before they vanished. Director Kang Young-man explains that the natural colors created by the intense sun and Mediterranean climate of Provence serve as a crucial element of the film's *mise-en-scène*.
Why the South of France?
For Korean tourists, trips to France still tend to center on Paris; many return home after visiting the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Montmartre. However, for admirers of Vincent van Gogh, it is impossible to overlook Provence in the south of France—the place where his artistic world underwent an explosive transformation. After living in Paris, Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888. Captivated by the region's intense sunlight and vibrant colors, he immortalized the landscapes of Arles and its surroundings in numerous works. Many of his world-renowned masterpieces were created during this period in the south of France. To Van Gogh, Provence was not merely a place of residence but a vast open-air studio where he discovered a new world of color and painting. The Rhône River and ancient streets of Arles, the vast surrounding farmlands and fields, the nature of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and the Camargue region stretching to the Mediterranean all deeply influenced his artistic body of work. The film *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* follows a modern-day figure as they retrace that very path. One of the locations prominently featured in the film is Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a small Mediterranean coastal village that remains relatively unfamiliar to Korean tourists. Although this small fishing village—located about 40 km south of Arles—is not widely known among Korean travelers, it holds great significance in Van Gogh’s artistic journey. Van Gogh visited this location between late May and early June of 1888, staying for about five days and focusing intensely on painting the Mediterranean Sea, fishing boats, and the village scenery. During that time, he observed boats heading out to sea in the morning and worked while moving between the beach and the village, producing numerous drawings and paintings. In this film, Director Kang Young-man placed great importance on the scenes shot in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to showcase the Mediterranean landscapes and light that Van Gogh himself experienced—elements distinct from the Arles scenery familiar to most tourists.
Not a Period Piece Recreating Van Gogh’s Era!
However, *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* is not a biopic that simply reenacts Van Gogh’s life. The film is set in the present day, and its protagonist is not Vincent van Gogh. The main character, Mary, is a young female painter suffering from deep frustration and financial hardship because her work isn't selling. Having lost sight of any reason to keep painting, she even contemplates taking her own life. Amidst this, she becomes intrigued by the life and death of Vincent van Gogh and decides to trace his footsteps herself.
During her journey, she encounters a mysterious tour guide named "Vincent," who bears a striking resemblance to the artist. The two travel together across Arles and various locations in Provence, following the path of Van Gogh’s life and art. However, about two-thirds of the way through the film, they part ways at the Arles train station. After concluding her journey with Vincent, Mary continues on to Paris alone by train. The latter part of the film—spanning from Paris and Montmartre to Auvers-sur-Oise, where the final leg of Van Gogh’s life unfolded—depicts a journey in which Marie confronts her own life in solitude.
The film goes beyond merely recounting Van Gogh’s life; it poses a question about the significance that an artist’s suffering and obsessive dedication to creation can hold for another artist more than 130 years later. At the heart of the film is the process by which Marie, who had once contemplated giving up on life, walks in Van Gogh’s footsteps to rediscover reasons to live and the meaning of artistic creation.
Van Gogh’s Final Painting, *Tree Roots*, and Questions Surrounding His Death
A key setting in the film’s latter half is Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village north of Paris. Van Gogh spent the final period of his life there—approximately 70 days between May and July 1890—producing a staggering number of works. While many remember *Wheatfield with Crows* as his last painting, recent research identifies *Tree Roots*, created on July 27, 1890, as his final work. The location believed to be the actual setting for the painting has also been identified in Auvers-sur-Oise. Debates regarding Van Gogh’s death continue to this day. Mainstream art historical research, including that of the Van Gogh Museum, maintains that he died on July 29, 1890—two days after shooting himself. Conversely, some researchers have raised the possibility of an accidental shooting by a third party, citing the circumstances and various pieces of evidence from the time. Rather than definitively asserting one specific historical narrative, *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* poses a question as the protagonist, Marie, traces the final locations associated with the artist: "Is everything we know about Van Gogh’s final moments truly the whole truth?"
Connecting the Lives of Artists: From Van Gogh to César Franck
The film features traces not only of Van Gogh but also of another artist active in France during the same era.
One of the places Marie visits in Paris is the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. Through this location, the film briefly connects the viewer to the world of César Franck—a composer and organist active in France—and his sacred work, *Panis Angelicus* (Bread of Angels). This serves as a narrative device demonstrating that *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* is more than just a travelogue-style film touring Van Gogh’s haunts; it is a work that seeks to bridge the gap between artists who created masterpieces amidst the suffering of their lives and a young artist living in the present day.
Filming Support from French Local Governments and Institutions
The production received cooperation from various local authorities in France. Notably, the city of Arles provided assistance for filming, as did Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence—the site where Van Gogh stayed for treatment and produced numerous works. Van Gogh did not cease his creative work after voluntarily admitting himself to the sanitarium in Saint-Rémy in 1889; indeed, he produced approximately 150 paintings during this period. Instead of recreating these historic locations on a set, the film was shot on location, focusing on capturing the moment where Van Gogh’s paintings and the contemporary landscape merge within a single frame.
**Works by Korean and French Artists Featured in the Film**
*Prayer, Vincent van Gogh* stands out as an international collaboration between cinema and the visual arts. The film naturally incorporates not only Van Gogh’s works but also pieces by two French artists and eleven Korean artists into the set design and props. Rather than serving as mere background decoration, these contemporary artworks are seamlessly woven into the narrative—appearing in the studio of the protagonist, Marie (a painter), and various other spaces throughout the film. With the participation of Korean and French artists alongside a joint production team from Korea, France, and the U.S., the film takes on the character of an international art project where cinema and painting converge.
“Not a journey to trace Van Gogh’s footsteps, but a journey to find the will to live again.”
In this film, Director Kang Young-man focuses less on retelling the well-known life story of Van Gogh and more on what a contemporary artist can discover through Van Gogh’s life. Despite enduring financial hardship, loneliness, and mental anguish, Van Gogh never gave up painting. The colors and landscapes he left behind continue to draw people from all over the world to France, even more than 130 years later. In *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh*, Marie’s journey also begins as a path toward death, but it gradually shifts direction as she comes face-to-face with the landscapes Van Gogh once beheld and the paths he walked. From vast golden wheat fields, sunflowers, and lavender to the Rhône River, the Mediterranean, the old alleys of Arles, the natural beauty of Saint-Rémy, and finally Auvers-sur-Oise—where Van Gogh painted until his final days—the film traces these landscapes not to dwell on Van Gogh’s death, but ultimately to celebrate “life.”
A young painter, following the trail of Van Gogh’s art, begins to view her own life and work in a new light. This is the message that *Prayer: Vincent van Gogh*—a co-production between South Korea, France, and the United States—seeks to convey to the audience.
*Prayer: Vincent van Gogh* is scheduled for release in the second half of 2027.
