South Korea Finishes 3rd Overall at ‘2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games’... 16-Day Competition Concludes

Gold Medal Count Falls Short of Pre-Tournament Goal of 40–45

By Park Dong-je, Break News – The South Korean delegation concluded the ‘2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games’ in third place overall, securing 39 gold medals.

The ‘2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games’ wraps up its 16-day run with a closing ceremony scheduled for 6 PM on the 4th at the Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium in Nagoya, Japan.

With the equestrian show jumping event held on the 4th marking the end of the competition schedule, South Korea finished third overall (with a total of 150 medals), claiming 39 gold, 43 silver, and 68 bronze medals.

In terms of gold medals alone, this is the lowest count in 44 years, dating back to the 1982 New Delhi Games (28 gold, 28 silver, 37 bronze). South Korea has seen a continuing downward trend in gold medals, recording 49 at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games, 42 at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, and now 39. The tally also fell short of the pre-tournament goal of 40 to 45 gold medals.

China took first place overall at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games (169 gold, 89 silver, 83 bronze; 341 total), while host nation Japan finished second (83 gold, 95 silver, 91 bronze; 269 total). They were followed by India (4th), Uzbekistan (5th), Iran (6th), Thailand (7th), Kazakhstan (8th), Hong Kong (9th), and Bahrain (10th). North Korea ranked 12th.

Meanwhile, the next Asian Games are scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, in 2030. This marks the first time Doha will host the Asian Games in 24 years, since 2006.
