A Naturalistic Sanctuary Teeming with Over 510 Species of Plants and Trees: Gwangyang’s First Private Garden, ‘Seven Seasons,’ Opens
Officially Registered as Private Garden No. 35 of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City; Spanning 6,300㎡ and Reflecting the Philosophy of German Horticulturist Karl Foerster; Features Range from Waterside Ecological Gardens to Rock Gardens; Expected to Revitalize Local Garden Culture and Tourism Ecosystems
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su — ‘Seven Seasons,’ the first private garden in the Gwangyang area and a prime example of naturalistic garden design, has officially opened as a place of relaxation for citizens and tourists alike.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced that it has officially registered ‘Seven Seasons,’ located in Gwangyang, as the city’s 35th private garden and has commenced full-scale operations to promote garden culture in everyday life.
Designated as Private Garden No. 35, ‘Seven Seasons’ is a large-scale, lifestyle-oriented garden covering approximately 6,300㎡ (about 1,900 pyeong), where a diverse array of over 510 species of trees and flowering plants blend harmoniously.
The garden is the fruit of over five years of hard work by its owner, Seo Sun-mi, who cultivated the land herself after moving to Gwangyang in 2019 with the aim of living in harmony with nature.
The name ‘Seven Seasons’ was inspired by the naturalistic gardening philosophy of Karl Foerster, a world-renowned German horticulturist and philosopher. Moving beyond the conventional four-season division, the design vividly captures the changing seasons by categorizing them into seven distinct flows—early spring, spring, early summer, summer, autumn, late autumn, and winter—thereby highlighting the subtle transformations and vitality of the plants.
The "Seven Seasons" garden achieves both ecological health and scenic beauty, centered around a naturalistic stream and a waterfront area that actively incorporates clear water from the nearby Supyeongcheon Stream. The garden is meticulously organized into thematic zones, each tailored to specific vegetation requirements.
The "Waterside Ecological Garden" is a wetland-style space created by utilizing the organic water resources of Supyeongcheon Stream. Home to a rich variety of aquatic plants—such as irises, Japanese water irises, and calla lilies—it boasts a serene waterside landscape alongside a clean aquatic environment. The “Rock Garden” features a stylish arrangement of natural stones combined with a diverse array of silver grass and ornamental grasses, creating a unique, three-dimensional landscape that evokes the feeling of walking through a natural, arid terrain.
Inside the garden, a succession of flowering plants blooms throughout the seasons, creating a continuous feast of color all year round and offering visitors deep emotional healing and relaxation.
“Seven Seasons” had already garnered significant external recognition for its originality and excellence prior to its official opening. It was honored with the Grand Prize in the Private Garden category at the “2026 Beautiful Garden Contest” held last June, where its creative spatial layout and naturalistic planting techniques were highly acclaimed.
Seo Sun-mi, the owner who cultivated the garden, expressed her aspirations, stating, “It is deeply meaningful that ‘Seven Seasons’—which I nurtured with devotion, plant by plant, after moving to Gwangyang in search of a life deeply connected with nature—has come to fruition as a registered private garden.” She added, “Moving forward, I intend to develop it beyond a mere place to look around; I want it to become a multifaceted space for communication where visitors can learn about and experience diverse garden cultures while sharing an appreciation for the value of nature.”
Kang Myeong-su, Vice Mayor for Industry and Economy of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, delivered a congratulatory address, noting, “It is significant that ‘Seven Seasons,’ the Grand Prize winner of the ‘2026 Beautiful Garden Contest,’ is opening as the 35th private garden in our Special City and the first in Gwangyang City.” He expressed hope that “this opening will serve as a catalyst to further spread garden culture within the daily lives of citizens.” ...he stated.
Vice Mayor Kang emphasized, “We will continue to identify and support outstanding private gardens hidden throughout the region. Our goal is not only to enable citizens to enjoy the tranquility of gardens in their daily lives but also to actively utilize these spaces as attractive lifestyle-oriented tourism assets that help address challenges such as population decline and the risk of regional extinction.”
Meanwhile, the Integrated Special City has been running the “Beautiful Garden Contest” since 2020 to discover exceptional local gardens and provide administrative and financial support for their registration as private gardens. These efforts are yielding tangible policy results by transforming private spaces into places of relaxation for all citizens and fostering them into unique local tourism resources.
