KENTECH Sweeps Three AI Talent Development and Research Projects from MSIT, Securing 48 Billion Won
Selected for Consecutive National AI Projects; Accelerating AI Transformation (AX) in Key Industries of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Region and Training High-Level Master’s and Doctoral Talent
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = KENTECH (Korea Institute of Energy Technology) has been selected for three major AI talent development and research support projects organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), positioning itself as a key hub for leading the AI transformation of local industries.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju region announced that KENTECH was ultimately selected for the following MSIT projects: ▲AI Innovation Talent Development, ▲Regional Intelligence Innovation Talent Development, and ▲AI Top-Tier Emerging Researcher Support (AI Star Fellowship).
With a total investment of 48 billion won, these projects will significantly enhance the capabilities of AI specialists (at the master’s and doctoral levels) and incumbent workers in local industries, while supporting ambitious AI research by outstanding emerging researchers. KENTECH plans to collaborate with approximately 70 companies in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region to launch full-scale research, demonstration, and technology development aimed at the AI transformation (AX) of key local industries such as energy, mobility, and agriculture.
A breakdown of the projects reveals that the 'AI Innovation Talent Development' project will receive a total investment of 19 billion won—comprising 16.3 billion won in state funding and 550 million won in municipal funding—over a six-year period ending in 2031. In collaboration with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and TDL Co., Ltd., KENTECH plans to cultivate field-oriented AI-based energy convergence talent through research and demonstration projects focused on energy systems—such as power grids—and next-generation energy materials.
Additionally, the "Regional AI Innovation Talent Cultivation" project will receive a total of 18 billion won in funding—comprising 15 billion won in state funds and 750 million won in municipal funds—over an eight-year period ending in 2033. Leveraging the university's ICT capabilities, the project aims to develop intelligent technologies linked to key regional industries through joint industry-academia research with approximately 70 local companies, ultimately producing 190 specialists tailored to industrial needs.
Furthermore, the university was selected for the "AI Top-Tier Emerging Researcher Support Program (AI Star Fellowship)," which backs creative and ambitious AI research by outstanding early-career researchers; this program provides approximately 11 billion won in state funding through 2031.
With these project selections, the Integrated Special City plans to actively support the supply of high-level industrial specialists by linking KENTECH’s unparalleled AI research and talent cultivation capabilities with key regional industries.
Yoo Hyun-ho, Director of the Energy Industry Bureau for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, stated, "The selection for these multiple Ministry of Science and ICT projects is highly significant, as it establishes a massive platform to combine KENTECH’s top-tier AI talent cultivation capabilities with tangible innovation in regional industries." He further emphasized, “We will spare no policy or administrative support to ensure that universities and local companies collaborate seamlessly to cultivate the key talent who will lead future cutting-edge industries, and that the universities’ outstanding research achievements rapidly permeate the industrial sector, driving the AI transformation of local industries and strengthening their global competitiveness.”
