[Break News] Reporter Park Young-jae — Incumbent Chairman Kim Seong-ho has won a third consecutive term in the election for the 21st chairman of the POSCO labor union. Consequently, negotiations regarding wages and collective agreements—which had been temporarily suspended—are expected to resume.

The POSCO labor union held a vote to elect its leadership, including the 21st chairman, from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the 2nd.

Out of a total of 8,972 eligible voters, 8,680 participated in the election. Candidate Kim Seong-ho secured 6,382 votes (73.53%), defeating candidate Kim Dae-eok, who received 2,298 votes (26.47%).

Chairman Kim’s new three-year term runs from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2029. With this third consecutive term, he will have led the POSCO labor union for a total of seven years.

The 21st leadership team consists of Chairman Kim Seong-ho, Senior Vice Chairman Jo Yang-rae, Pohang Vice Chairman Park Cheon-su, Secretary-General Kim Gyeong-su, Gwangyang Vice Chairman Shin Jae-ho, and Secretary-General Kim Tae-seong.

With the launch of the new leadership team approaching, labor and management are set to resume this year's wage and collective agreement negotiations. The POSCO labor union is demanding a 7.1% base salary increase, a 600% incentive bonus, 50 shares of company stock, and a 200% holiday bonus. Meanwhile, the company has proposed a 2% base salary increase, a 3.5 million won performance incentive, and 500,000 won in local gift certificates.

There remains a significant gap between the demands of the two sides. Given that the union previously launched a strike—the first in POSCO’s 58-year history—following a breakdown in negotiations, the scale of wage increases and incentive payments is expected to be the central issue in the upcoming talks.

Regarding the election results, POSCO stated, "As the company faces an unprecedentedly difficult internal and external environment, we will maintain continuous communication with the union based on labor-management cooperation to overcome this crisis," adding, "We will do our utmost to reach a swift and smooth agreement."
