The film *JFK*... "Comparing it to the movie *Assassins* is absurd!"

- Lee Sang-don, Former Member of the National Assembly

Some people try to justify the movie *Assassins* by comparing it to the 1991 film *JFK*, but such a comparison is nonsensical. Above all, the assassination of Kennedy is not a subject to be discussed lightly. The events of November 22, 1963, were complex in themselves, involving an intricate web of 1950s and 60s American politics, foreign relations, and the Mafia. Immediately following the release of the Warren Commission Report, a flood of books challenging its findings appeared. Congress reinvestigated the assassination between 1978 and 1979, identifying organized crime—specifically the Mafia—as the force behind the killing. By the 1980s, however, with most key figures deceased and new facts difficult to uncover, the assassination remained an "eternal mystery."

Then, Oliver Stone’s 1991 film *JFK* became a box-office hit, bringing the assassination back into the spotlight. Stone featured the real-life figure Jim Garrison, the District Attorney of New Orleans, as the protagonist. Garrison conducted a solitary investigation with a small team of aides; in court, he challenged the "single-bullet theory" and presented the Zapruder film, which appeared to show the bullet striking Kennedy’s head coming from the front. (The chief prosecutor personally conducted the investigation. As this shows, U.S. prosecutors are fully empowered to conduct investigations; they simply do not do so in the ordinary course of events.) However, the arguments refuting the Warren Commission’s conclusions were not actually raised by Jim Garrison when he indicted Clay Shaw. Oliver Stone simply conveyed facts uncovered by earlier researchers of the Kennedy assassination to the public through the character of Garrison (played by Kevin Costner) in his film.

Since 2023 marked the 60th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, I shared posts on Facebook and my blog (leesangdon.com) based on books I had read about the event; I imagine some of you may have read them at the time. In short, the attempted assassination of Park Chung-hee and the death of First Lady Yuk Young-soo bear absolutely no comparison to the Kennedy assassination. It is utterly absurd to suggest that a president—whose wife was killed during a failed attempt on his own life—would simply leave the perpetrator and the forces behind them untouched. In the case of the Kennedy assassination, his brother Robert was the Attorney General at the time, but after his brother’s death, he was reduced to a mere figurehead. Lyndon B. Johnson, who succeeded to the presidency, abolished the mandatory retirement age for FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover—whom the Kennedy brothers had despised—effectively granting him a lifetime appointment. Oswald, the man accused of shooting Kennedy, denied the crime and claimed to be a "patsy"; he was subsequently shot dead by Jack Ruby—a strip club operator with Mafia ties—just as he was being transferred to the county jail. In contrast, Mun Se-gwang confessed to everything, and footage of the crime itself exists. In other words, the two cases simply cannot be compared. The Movie *JFK*

<The following text was written three years ago and is being reposted for readers who may have missed it.>

One cannot discuss the assassination of John F. Kennedy without mentioning the movie *JFK*. By the 1980s, many of the suspicions and questions surrounding the assassination had largely faded from public memory. However, the 1991 release of *JFK*, directed by Oliver Stone, led to a significant increase in the number of people who believed a conspiracy was involved in the assassination. The film was a massive box-office success.

Films that blend fiction with historical fact often spark controversy, particularly when they appear to defame the reputations of real individuals or distort history. *JFK* is a prime example of such a controversial film. Oliver Stone conveys the message that Kennedy was assassinated by the CIA and the military-industrial complex. While such a narrative choice is the director's prerogative, the film relies on far too many forced connections.

The protagonist of *JFK* is Jim Garrison (1921–1992), the District Attorney of New Orleans, who launched an investigation after becoming suspicious of David Ferrie (1918–1967)—a man Oswald had associated with during his time in New Orleans. As the District Attorney overseeing New Orleans, Garrison held an elected position, subject to a vote every four years. A graduate of Tulane Law School, Garrison served as District Attorney from 1962 to 1973. In the film, David Ferrie (played by Joe Pesci) is portrayed as a figure who works for the CIA and participates in a covert operation to overthrow the Castro government by aiding Cuban refugees. The movie also depicts a scene where Oswald joins Ferrie in this CIA covert operation. However, all of this is fiction.

In reality, Jim Garrison believed that David Ferrie was linked to the CIA. However, the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA), which conducted investigations between 1978 and 1979, acknowledged the possibility of a conspiracy behind the Kennedy assassination but identified organized crime—specifically the Mafia—as the party responsible. The CIA and FBI faced criticism regarding the assassination not because they orchestrated it, but because they failed to prevent it and subsequently covered up facts to conceal their ties to the Mafia and evade accountability. Therefore, the 1991 film faces valid criticism for excessive fictionalization by pointing to the CIA—or an "invisible government"—as the force behind the assassination.

As depicted in the film, while Jim Garrison was investigating David Ferrie, Ferrie died under mysterious circumstances on February 22, 1967. Following this, Garrison made a massive leap in logic and indicted Clay Shaw, a prominent New Orleans businessman (played by Tommy Lee Jones). The indictment was so ill-founded that the jury dismissed the charges in less than an hour. Although this incident effectively made Garrison a laughingstock, he was subsequently re-elected as District Attorney and served in that role for 12 years. Many researchers studying the Kennedy assassination identified David Ferrie as a close associate of Carlos Marcello and suspected that he directly carried out Marcello's orders regarding the assassination. It is widely believed that Ferrie likely instructed Oswald to participate in the assassination and later directed Ruby to kill Oswald. However, when District Attorney Jim Garrison began investigating Ferrie—suspecting he was acting under CIA orders—Ferrie died under mysterious circumstances. Although the coroner ruled the cause of death a brain hemorrhage, there were many unanswered questions.

David Ferrie suffered from a rare condition that prevented body hair growth, leaving him completely bald; consequently, he wore a wig and penciled in his eyebrows. Joe Pesci, who portrayed Ferrie in the film, also appears wearing a wig and drawn-on eyebrows. In reality, Ferrie was taller than the version of him played by Pesci. As a gay man with no family, there was no one to raise objections regarding his suspicious death. Due to his close ties to Carlos Marcello, Ferrie frequently visited Marcello's secluded estate in the swamplands. It is said that when Ferrie learned Garrison intended to summon him, he told an associate that he would not survive the situation.

David Ferrie's death meant the loss of a crucial key to uncovering the truth behind the Kennedy assassination. The Warren Commission did not investigate Ferrie, as the FBI had covered up that aspect of the case. Ultimately, District Attorney Jim Garrison’s hasty investigation had the effect of forever destroying the key to unraveling the connections between Marcello and Oswald, as well as between Marcello and Jack Ruby.

So, was Jim Garrison, the District Attorney of New Orleans, unaware of Carlos Marcello? Marcello had extended his influence to Louisiana politicians, judges, and prosecutors, including by providing political funds to officials in the state and in New Orleans. Garrison served as the elected District Attorney of New Orleans for twelve years—specifically from 1962 to 1973, the very period when Marcello was at the height of his power. Critics of Garrison often point to this fact.

Oliver Stone based his film *JFK* on the book written by Jim Garrison. In his later years, Garrison made a brief cameo appearance in the film as Chief Justice Earl Warren. Stone intentionally used the movie to propagate his own political views (which leaned left). The film was released in 1991, during the heyday of the conservative Republican administrations of Reagan and Bush; Stone viewed the Republican government as an administration beholden to the CIA and the military-industrial complex. George H.W. Bush, the president at the time of the film's release, had previously served as Director of the CIA. [July 12, 2023]
