Blue House Responds to Kim Yo-jong’s Claim That Landmine Blast Was a South Korean ‘Fabricated Farce’: “Does Not Help Mutual Trust”

Kim Yo-jong has once again denied the preliminary findings by the South Korean military and the UN Command attributing the DMZ landmine explosion to mines planted by North Korean troops; she repeatedly condemned the South's investigation results and Lee Jae-myung's message calling for de-escalation as the "climax of a self-staged farce," while North Korea staged another ballistic missile provocation on the 3rd.

On the 2nd, the Blue House responded to criticism from Kim Yo-jong, a senior official of the Workers' Party of Korea—who dismissed the landmine explosion as a "farce staged by South Korea"—by urging the North to "cease unproductive criticism and join efforts for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula."

In a press statement released that night, the Blue House remarked, "Slanderous rhetoric directed at the government and the President does not help in building mutual trust."

The government added, "We will transparently uncover the truth behind this landmine explosion through a swift and thorough investigation and take necessary measures," noting that "at the same time, it is essential to ease military tensions between the two Koreas and resume dialogue and communication to prevent such incidents from recurring."

Earlier that day, Kim issued a statement via the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) criticizing President Lee Jae-myung’s commemorative address for the 78th Armed Forces Day and Unification Minister Jeong Dong-young’s proposal for inter-Korean dialogue. She also reiterated her denial of the initial findings by the South Korean military and the UN Command—which attributed the DMZ landmine explosion to mines planted by North Korean forces—and condemned the South's investigation results and President Lee’s message on easing tensions as the "climax of a self-staged farce."

They fiercely criticized the situation, asking, "Why would anyone imagine we would do something to entangle ourselves with South Korea?" They explained that they are currently "fortifying the border" to permanently seal it off—blocking even wild animals from passing through—so as to avoid any future confrontation. They added, "Our greatest desire is to sever all ties forever with a people who bring nothing but headaches whenever we cross paths."

Meanwhile, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 3rd, North Korea resumed military provocations by launching another ballistic missile toward the East Sea that morning; this marks the 16th missile provocation of the year and comes 12 days after the landmine explosion incident.

In a press briefing that morning, the Blue House reiterated its existing stance regarding the matter, stating that it had convened an emergency security review meeting following North Korea's ballistic missile launch and urged an immediate halt to such actions; it further characterized the North's repeated ballistic missile launches as not only a violation of UN Security Council resolutions but also a grave act that does nothing to help manage the current situation.

Criticism is mounting among the opposition and the general public regarding the government's continued conciliatory stance toward North Korea—despite the North's persistent refusals, military provocations, and a landmine explosion that injured multiple South Korean soldiers.
