Jeonnam-Gwangju Office of Education Selects Two Sites for Joint Projects Utilizing Closed Schools
Total of 7.1 Billion Won to be Invested in Former Najin Elementary Yongchang Branch (Yeosu) and Former Munpyeongnam Elementary (Naju); Yeongam Site Also Selected in Ministry of the Interior and Safety Contest
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam-Gwangju Office of Education announced on the 14th that two projects—located in Yeosu and Naju—were selected in the "Joint Cooperation Project between Offices of Education and Local Governments Utilizing Closed Schools," organized by the Ministry of Education.
This contest was launched to transform unused closed schools—which are increasing due to the declining school-age population—into assets for the local community. Under this initiative, offices of education and local governments jointly develop projects and share costs, with selected projects receiving state funding (special grants).
The former Najin Elementary Yongchang Branch, located in Hwayang-myeon, Yeosu, will be transformed into the "(Tentative Name) Yeosu Happy Complex Cultural Park." In addition to an existing public indoor playground, new facilities will be added, including a park golf course, a book café, a history museum dedicated to the closed school, a screen golf practice room, a multi-purpose room, and a rest area for residents.
A total of 4.5 billion won will be invested in the project (2 billion won in special grants, 1.5 billion won from the Office of Education, and 1 billion won from Yeosu City). Once opened, the park golf course will be free for seniors aged 65 and older. The book café and agricultural market, to be operated by the resident council, are intended to serve as spaces for intergenerational communication, linking local specialty sales with regional festivals such as the "Healing Temple Concert" at nearby Yongmunsa Temple.
The former Munpyeongnam Elementary School in Munpyeong-myeon, Naju, will be developed into the "Naju On (All/Warm) Area... Naju On (Warm) Space." Facilities such as an ESG education center, solar power installations, an eco-campsite, a futsal court, a park golf course, and a red clay walking trail will be developed around the Naju Educational Supplies Sharing Support Center, which opened this year.
With a total project budget of 2.6 billion won (comprising 2 billion won in special grants, 400 million won from the Office of Education, and 200 million won from Naju City), the initiative aims to facilitate the sharing of educational supplies among local schools and establish the site as a hub for carbon neutrality and resource circulation education. Plans are also in place to support residents' leisure activities, attract a "floating population" (visitors and part-time residents), and create local jobs through intergenerational park golf and eco-camping programs.
Meanwhile, in a similar open-call project organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the "Yeongam Red Clay Resource Experience & Education Center" project submitted by Yeongam-gun was selected as one of only two winning projects nationwide. Yeongam-gun plans to collaborate with the Yeongam Office of Education to transform the former Dopo Elementary School Susan Branch—acquired in 2024—into an educational and experiential space utilizing local red clay resources.
Han Jong-deok, Head of the Financial Management Division at the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Office of Education, stated, "This selection represents a meaningful example of win-win cooperation where the Office of Education and local government join forces to revitalize a closed school property into an asset for the local community." He added, "We will provide full support to ensure the former school becomes a new hub for education, culture, and welfare, ultimately improving residents' quality of life and revitalizing the region."
