Honoring the Noble Sacrifice of National Heroes: Solemn Memorial Service Held for Fallen Police Officers in Yaksan, Wando (76th Anniversary)

Commemorating 26 police officers and 3 local defense force members killed in action while defending the coast of Yaksan-do in 1950; attended by approximately 140 bereaved family members and officials from Jeonnam and Gwangju... "Upholding their noble spirit by building a safe Republic of Korea."

(Jangheung = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = A memorial ceremony was held in Yaksan-myeon, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, to honor the spirits of the police officers and local defense force members who sacrificed their lives to defend the nation during the Korean War.

The Jangheung Police Station announced that it solemnly conducted the "76th Anniversary Memorial Service for Fallen Police Officers in Yaksan, Wando" at the site in Yaksan-myeon, Wando-gun, at 11:00 a.m. on the 14th.

Approximately 140 people attended the ceremony to pay their respects through the laying of flowers and incense. Attendees included bereaved families of the fallen officers; key police officials such as Kim Ho-seung (Commissioner of Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency), Kim Gyeong-ho (Chief of Jangheung Police Station), and Lee Beom-hyeong (Chief of Wando Police Station); local government officials including No Yeong-hwan (Deputy Governor of Jangheung-gun) and Lee Beom-u (Deputy Governor of Wando-gun); Choi Jeong-uk (Chairman of Wando County Council); families of police veterans; and heads of local institutions and civic groups from Jangheung and Wando.

In his memorial address, Kim Ho-seung, Commissioner of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, expressed his sentiments, stating, "I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families of the fallen police officers, who have endured years of sorrow after sacrificing their beloved family members for the country." He emphasized, "The noble spirit of sacrifice shown by police heroes—who laid down their lives for their country without a moment's hesitation even in the face of a desperate crisis—is the very root of the Republic of Korea as it stands today." He added, "Upholding the legacy of these heroes, the police will do their utmost to build a safer nation and fulfill their mission of protecting the lives and property of the people."

The "Memorial Service for Fallen Police Officers on Yaksan Island, Wando" is held every September to commemorate the fierce Battle of Yaksan Island—which took place during the early stages of the Korean War—and to honor the patriotic spirits of those who fell in combat.

On September 14, 1950, a temporary defense unit—comprising approximately 100 personnel, including some 70 officers from the Jangheung Police Station and 30 local defense force members—was conducting coastal surveillance and defense operations on Yaksan Island, Wando. During this mission, they engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat and a pitched battle against a battalion-sized force of the North Korean People's Army that had infiltrated the island under the cover of darkness.

Despite being outnumbered, the joint police-military unit stood firm, successfully defending their positions and achieving a remarkable military feat by killing approximately 150 enemy soldiers. However, during this daring defense, a total of 29 personnel—including 26 officers from the Jangheung Police Station and three members of the local defense force—made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Jangheung Police Station and the local community continue to hold this annual memorial service to honor the souls of those who gave their lives for the nation and to pass on their noble spirit of patriotism to future generations.
