Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Metropolitan City Calls for Regional Waste Recovery Facility Sites; 9 Locations Proposed Across 4 Districts

Gwangsan-gu Leads with 5 Sites; Seo-gu Submits 2, While Nam-gu and Buk-gu Submit 1 Each; Final Applications Due Oct. 13 Following District-Level Reviews; Focus Shifts to Feasibility Studies and Securing Resident Acceptance; City Committed to Selecting Optimal Site

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = A total of nine sites have been proposed in the call for locations for the Gwangju-area regional waste recovery facility (incinerator), a project spearheaded by the Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Metropolitan City. This key infrastructure project—aimed at ensuring the stable treatment of municipal waste and establishing an eco-friendly resource circulation system—has now entered the stage of full-scale site verification.

On the 14th, the Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Metropolitan City announced that, following the call for site proposals that began on August 14, a total of nine locations were submitted across four autonomous districts by the September 12 deadline for initial applications.

A breakdown of applications by district shows that Gwangsan-gu had the highest level of participation with five sites, followed by Seo-gu with two sites, and Nam-gu and Buk-gu with one site each. Dong-gu was not included in this initial round of applications.

This call for proposals represents the first phase of a 60-day schedule running from August 14 to October 12. The districts that accepted applications from individuals, corporations, and organizations through September 12 have now begun a comprehensive preliminary review of the proposed sites. Each autonomous district will conduct a thorough, multifaceted review of potential sites—considering local conditions, resident consent rates, and compliance with urban planning and environmental regulations—before submitting final applications to the Integrated Special City by October 13.

Subsequently, a "Site Selection Committee" will be launched to ensure the objectivity and fairness of the project. This committee will commission professional feasibility study agencies to evaluate the locational, environmental, and economic viability of the candidate sites submitted by the districts. The optimal site will be finalized following a comprehensive review that incorporates the feasibility study results and resident feedback.

Jeong Mi-gyeong, Head of the Resource Circulation Division for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated City, emphasized, "Each district is currently conducting on-site surveys and multifaceted reviews to rigorously verify key factors, such as site suitability and resident consent." She added, "We will spare no administrative or technical support at the city level to ensure the districts complete their site reviews accurately and without setbacks."

Meanwhile, the Integrated Special City is actively communicating with the public—prioritizing resident acceptance—while demonstrating the necessity of a regional resource recovery facility to address the climate crisis and transition to an eco-friendly resource circulation system. The city is holding a series of resident information sessions to explain the facility's safety and state-of-the-art pollution prevention technologies, while also conducting comprehensive promotional campaigns in cooperation with the districts through the distribution of materials and the release of diverse video content.
