Jeonnam-Gwangju Office of Education Hosts Welcoming and Boarding Ceremony for ‘Haenuri-ho’ at Wando Port

State-of-the-art 3,000-ton joint training vessel for fisheries high schools makes its first port call at Wando; 71 students from Wando Fisheries High School’s Fishing Vessel Operation Management Department begin a six-week coastal and deep-sea training voyage.

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = On the morning of the 8th, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Office of Education held a welcoming and boarding ceremony at Pier 3 of Wando Port to commemorate the first port call of ‘Haenuri-ho,’ a joint training vessel for fisheries high schools.

A large number of attendees—including 71 students from the Fishing Vessel Operation Management Department at Wando Fisheries High School, faculty members, the Haenuri-ho crew, and local dignitaries—gathered to celebrate the students' departure for their first training voyage.

Haenuri-ho, a 3,000-ton class trawler, is a state-of-the-art joint training vessel built to replace an aging predecessor. It was constructed through a collaborative agreement involving five metropolitan and provincial offices of education (Jeonnam-Gwangju, Gyeongbuk, Incheon, Gyeongnam, and Chungnam), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries; the vessel’s official commissioning ceremony was held last December at the Busan Coast Guard pier.

This arrival at Wando Port marks the vessel's first port call since its commissioning. The Office of Education anticipates that this will largely resolve local concerns regarding a gap in fisheries practical training—an issue that had persisted since the decommissioning of the previous vessel, *Cheonghaejin-ho*.

Following the boarding ceremony, the students from the Fishing Vessel Operation Management Department will officially begin the ‘2026 Extended Basic Boarding Training Course.’ The students will complete a total of six weeks of practical, hands-on deep-sea sailing training, comprising four weeks of mooring in Wando and coastal waters training, followed by a two-week voyage to Sasebo, Japan.

Yang Hoe-ryong, Head of the Career Education Division, stated, "The *Haenuri-ho* will serve as a learning ground for students from Jeonnam to venture out into the wider world." He added, "We will provide full support to ensure that the trainees—taking their first steps as successors to the legacy of Cheonghaejin—successfully complete a safe and substantive training program."
