South Chungcheong Province Governor Park Soo-hyun Expresses Commitment to “All-out Effort for Precision Investigation and Control of Pine Wilt Disease in Taean”

South Chungcheong Province is embarking on a large-scale overhaul of its control network, including a precision fact-finding survey, after assessing that the spread of pine wilt disease in the Taean region is significantly exceeding official figures.

On the 8th, South Chungcheong Province Governor Park Soo-hyun visited Taean-gun and held a press conference with Taean County Mayor Yoon Hee-shin. During the conference, he presented the province's plans regarding local issues, including the response to pine wilt disease, the development of Anmyeondo Island, and the attraction of the headquarters of a unified power generation company.

The main topic of discussion at the conference was the pine wilt disease crisis, which is spreading rapidly, particularly in areas such as Nam-myeon, Taean.

On-site, concerns were raised that the number of infected trees far exceeds official statistics, highlighting the limitations of control plans based on existing data. In response, Governor Park stated, “The actual scale of infection is estimated to be two to four times greater than the announced figures,” adding, “We will re-investigate the infection situation from scratch at the provincial level to identify the exact extent of the damage.”

This decision stems from the judgment that systematic responses—such as securing a budget, deploying personnel, and establishing work zones—are impossible with understated statistics. It also reflects a sense of crisis that if the pest infestation spreads to key tourist destinations like Anmyeondo, it could inflict severe damage not only on the local forest landscape but also on the entire tourism industry.

In accordance with the Korea Forest Service guidelines, South Chungcheong Province plans to establish a 2km defensive line to prevent further spread, while simultaneously pursuing aerial pest control using drones and other means targeting provincial forests.

Governor Park added that he had requested approval for aerial pest control from the Minister of the Korea Forest Service and received a positive response.

The speed of spread on the ground is also critical. Mentioning that he had received photos from local residents and bus drivers showing signs of dead trees, Governor Park raised awareness, stating, “The situation is deteriorating so rapidly that the damage is becoming noticeable day by day.” Currently, Taean County is devoting all its efforts to pest control by forming a dedicated team and executing a special budget. South Chungcheong Province plans to act as an administrative bridge between Taean County and the Korea Forest Service to actively coordinate precise surveillance, the removal of infected trees, and the securing of pest control funds.
