“Leaping Forward to Find My Own Path”: Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City Holds ‘2026 Youth Gap Year Achievement Sharing Event’

30 Unemployed Youths from Across the Country Complete Career Exploration Planned by Themselves, Including AI, Creators, and Exhibition Planning; Customized Mentoring and Expanded Application to Digital and Social Economy Sectors… Promise of Continuous Support for Youth Advancement

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City organized an event to verify the results of support policies designed to help young people take care of their own lives and design new career paths.

On the 8th, Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City held the ‘2026 Youth Gap Year Achievement Sharing Event’ at Mudeung Hall in the Gwangju Government Complex, providing an opportunity to share the activity achievements and diverse experiences of the youths who participated in the program.

The ‘Youth Gap Year’ is a representative youth support program that helps young people take a breather amidst the ceaseless competition of academics and job preparation, and proactively explore their own career paths and life directions. Young people are provided with the opportunity to break away from conventional, standardized job preparation methods and envision their future more concretely through new challenges and experiences.

Thirty unemployed youths residing in the Gwangju region were ultimately selected to participate in this year's program. Over approximately 30 days, they personally planned career and social exploration activities tailored to their interests and goals, and then actively put their plans into action by staying at sites across the country, leaving Gwangju behind.

The fields of activity for the participating youths were highly diverse. They encompassed the entire spectrum of future industries and culture, ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) development to exhibition planning and content creation. The youths visited startup support organizations, innovative companies, and social economy enterprises nationwide to acquire practical on-site information and further concretized their potential through exchanges with experts.

In particular, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City significantly strengthened its support system this year to ensure the youths' plans could be executed without setbacks. It enhanced engagement by expanding one-on-one customized mentoring tailored to individual capabilities and goals, and provided a foundation that allows youths to operate stably even in other regions. Furthermore, by actively reflecting the rapidly changing industrial trends and the demands of the younger generation, the scope of activities has been expanded to include digital content, startups, the social economy, and youth policy research.

Young people attending the achievement sharing session on this day presented the changes in their lives and specific achievements they experienced during their 30-day "Gap Year." They also strengthened their mutual networks by sharing realistic concerns about their career paths and future plans. The youth cited their key achievements as: discovering their own unique career direction through self-planning and execution; and gaining direct experience in other regions and specialized fields that are usually difficult to access.

Kwon Yoon-sook, Head of the Youth Policy Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "The Youth Gap Year is a meaningful process where young people find their own paths rather than blindly following a road set by others." She added, "I hope the participating youth will use this 30-day experience as an asset to clarify their career paths and continue new challenges without fear." She further emphasized, "We will continue to discover and support diverse policies tailored to the needs of young people so that they can pause at any time to reflect on themselves and take a leap forward."
