최근 서울에서 열린 한어교(汉语桥) 세계중국어대회 현장을 찾았다. 행사장에 들어서는 순간 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 화려한 무대가 아니었다.
중국어로 자신을 소개하는 어린 학생들의 당당한 목소리, 발표를 준비하며 긴장과 설렘이 교차하는 초동, 청소년, 대학생들의 표정, 그리고 서로 다른 지역에서 모인 참가자들이 언어를 넘어 우정을 나누는 모습이었다.

그 장면을 바라보며 필자는 한 가지 확신을 갖게 되었다. 한어교 세계대회는 단순한 외국어 경연대회가 아니다. 그것은 미래를 준비하는 젊은 세대의 가능성을 보여주는 국제적 교육 플랫폼이며, 변화하는 시대가 요구하는 인재상을 확인하는 현장이었다.
21세기 세계는 거대한 전환기를 지나고 있다. 인공지능(AI)은 산업과 교육, 일자리 구조를 빠르게 바꾸고 있으며 디지털 기술은 국가 간 경계를 허물고 있다.
이제 경쟁력은 더 이상 특정 기술을 얼마나 많이 보유하고 있는가에만 달려 있지 않다. 서로 다른 문화와 사람을 이해하고 협력할 수 있는 능력이 국가와 개인의 미래를 결정하는 중요한 요소가 되고 있다.
그 중심에 언어가 있다. 언어는 단순한 의사소통 수단이 아니다. 언어는 상대의 역사와 문화를 이해하는 창이며, 서로 다른 사회를 연결하는 다리이다. 언어를 배운다는 것은 단어를 암기하는 일이 아니라 다른 문명과 사고방식을 이해하는 과정이다.
한어교 세계대회가 갖는 특별한 의미도 바로 여기에 있다. 참가자들은 중국어 실력을 겨루는 데 그치지 않았다.
중국의 역사와 문화, 예술과 전통을 배우고 이해하려 노력했으며, 이를 통해 더 넓은 세계를 바라보는 안목을 키우고 있었다.
특히 인상적이었던 것은 참가자들의 국제적 감각이었다. 한 참가자는 유창한 중국어로 자신의 꿈을 소개하며 "미래를 연결하는 사람이 되고 싶다"고 말했다.

또 한 대학생 참가자는 중국어 학습을 통해 중국 문화를 이해하게 되었고, 앞으로 국제교류 분야에서 활동하고 싶다고 밝혔다.
그들의 발표는 아직 서툰 부분도 있었지만, 그 안에는 미래를 향한 분명한 비전과 도전 정신이 담겨 있었다. 필자는 오히려 그 점에서 큰 감동을 받았다. 미래는 완성된 사람의 것이 아니라 배우고 성장하려는 사람의 것이기 때문이다.
중국은 세계 경제와 무역, 과학기술 분야에서 중요한 영향력을 갖고 있으며 한국 역시 중국과 긴밀한 경제·문화적 관계를 유지하고 있다. 양국은 수교 이후 다양한 분야에서 협력을 확대해 왔으며 앞으로도 청년 교류와 교육 협력의 중요성은 더욱 커질 것으로 예상된다.
물론 언어 하나만으로 미래가 보장되는 것은 아니다. 그러나 세계를 이해하려는 열린 자세와 다른 문화를 존중하는 태도는 미래 인재가 반드시 갖추어야 할 자질이다.
그런 의미에서 한어교 세계대회는 단순한 교육 행사가 아니라 글로벌 인재를 육성하는 미래 투자라고 할 수 있다.
국제사회는 지금 갈등과 협력이 공존하는 시대를 살아가고 있다. 보호무역주의와 지정학적 경쟁이 심화되고 있지만 한편으로는 기후변화, 인공지능, 보건안보와 같은 공동 과제가 국가 간 협력을 요구하고 있다. 이러한 시대일수록 서로를 이해하고 소통할 수 있는 인재가 필요하다.
필자는 한어교 세계대회 현장에서 한중 관계의 미래 또한 보았다. 미래 세대는 과거의 갈등보다 미래의 가능성에 더 큰 관심을 가지고 있었다.
그들은 국적과 지역을 넘어 서로를 이해하고 배우며 함께 성장하려 했다. 바로 이러한 청년들이 앞으로 한중 관계를 더욱 건강하고 안정적으로 발전시킬 주역이 될 것이다.
교육은 사람을 변화시키고, 변화된 사람은 사회를 발전시킨다. 그리고 언어는 그 변화의 출발점이 된다. 한어교 세계대회는 언어 교육의 장을 넘어 미래 세대가 세계 시민으로 성장하는 배움의 광장이었다.
행사장을 떠나며 필자는 다시 한 번 희망을 보았다. 참가자들의 눈빛 속에는 자신감이 있었고, 도전 정신이 있었으며, 세계를 향한 꿈이 있었다.
그 꿈은 개인의 미래를 넘어 한중 양국의 미래이자 동아시아의 미래이며, 더 나아가 인류 공동 번영의 가능성이었다.
한어교 세계대회에서 만난 젊은 세대의 열정은 우리에게 중요한 메시지를 전하고 있다. 미래는 준비된 사람의 것이며, 세계를 향해 열린 마음으로 배우는 청년들의 도전은 결코 헛되지 않다는 사실이다.
그리고 바로 그들의 눈빛 속에서 우리는 새로운 시대의 희망과 가능성을 발견할 수 있다.
필자가 한어교 세계대회를 바라보며 미래를 보았다고 말하는 이유도 바로 여기에 있다.

I recently visited the site of the Hanyuqiao World Chinese Language Competition held in Seoul. The moment I entered the venue, the first thing that caught my eye was not the glamorous stage.
It was the confident voices of young students introducing themselves in Chinese, the expressions of elementary, middle, and high school students showing a mix of nervousness and excitement as they prepared their presentations, and the sight of participants from different regions sharing friendship beyond language.

Watching that scene, I became convinced of one thing. The Hanyuqiao World Chinese Language Competition is not merely a foreign language contest. Learning a language is not simply about memorizing words, but a process of understanding different civilizations and ways of thinking.
This is precisely where the special significance of the World Conference on Chinese Language Education lies. The participants did not stop at merely competing in Chinese language proficiency.
They strove to learn and understand China's history, culture, art, and traditions, thereby cultivating a broader perspective on the world.
What was particularly impressive was the participants' international sensibility. One participant introduced their dream in fluent Chinese, stating, "I want to become someone who connects the future."
Another university student participant revealed that through learning Chinese, they came to understand Chinese culture and expressed a desire to work in the field of international exchange in the future.
Although their presentations still had some rough edges, they contained a clear vision for the future and a spirit of challenge. I was actually deeply moved by this aspect. This is because the future belongs not to those who are already finished, but to those who are willing to learn and grow.
China holds significant influence in the global economy, trade, and science and technology sectors, and Korea also maintains close economic and cultural ties with China. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have expanded cooperation in various fields, and the importance of youth exchange and educational cooperation is expected to grow even further in the future.
Of course, language alone does not guarantee a future. However, an open attitude toward understanding the world and a respectful attitude toward other cultures are qualities that future talent must possess.

At the World Congress of Chinese Language Education, I also witnessed the future of Korea-China relations. The future generation showed greater interest in future possibilities than in past conflicts.
They sought to understand, learn from, and grow together, transcending nationality and region. These very young people will become the key players in developing Korea-China relations into a healthier and more stable future.
Education transforms people, and transformed people advance society. Language serves as the starting point for that transformation. The World Congress of Chinese Language Education was more than just a venue for language education; it was a learning arena where the future generation could grow into global citizens.
As I left the venue, I saw hope once again. In the eyes of the participants, there was confidence, a spirit of challenge, and dreams for the world.
That dream transcended the future of individuals; it was the future of both Korea and China, the future of East Asia, and furthermore, the potential for the common prosperity of humanity.
The passion of the young generation I met at the World Conference on Chinese Language Education conveys an important message to us. It is the fact that the future belongs to those who are prepared, and that the challenges undertaken by young people learning with an open mind toward the world are never in vain.
And it is precisely in their eyes that we can discover the hope and possibilities of a new era.
This is precisely why I say that I saw the future while observing the World Conference on Chinese Language Education.
