성희승 작가의 전시회가 1월 7일부터 2월 7일. 학고재(서울 종로구 삼청로 50)에서 열린다.
“1942년 초 뉴욕의 어느 식당에서 한 남자가 냅킨에 장난삼아 그림을 그리고 있었다. 함께 식사하던 사람이 뭘 그리느냐고 물었다. “별거 아냐. 내 마음속에서 늘 함께하는 한 어린 녀석이지.”
“그 아이에 관한 이야기를 써보면 어때? 어린이용 이야기로 말이야. 올해 성탄절 전에 책을 낼 수 있으면 좋겠군.” 이 두 사람이 바로 <어린 왕자>의 작가 생텍쥐베리와 출판사 대표 히치콕이었다.
제2차 세계대전이 한창이던 프랑스가 나치에 점령되자 그는 미국 뉴욕으로 망명했다. 타국에서의 생활은 그에게 깊은 고립감과 고향에 대한 그리움을 안겨주었다.
전 세계 600개 이상의 언어로 번역되어 수많은 사람의 마음을 흔들고 심금을 울리며 국경을 초월한 베스트 셀러 <어린 왕자>는 이렇게 탄생 되었다.
별 작가 성희승의 작품을 더 잘 이해하기 위해서 우리는 이 <어린 왕자>를 주의 깊게 한번 음미해 볼 필요가 있다. 그녀가 별을 그리게 된 가장 직접적인 이유가 바로 그 생텍쥐베리의 이 책 때문이다.
그래서 별을 잘 그리는 작가의 작품이 혹시나 마음에 안 들거나, 별을 잘못 그렸다면 그것은 전적으로 생텍쥐베리의 책임이다.

그녀가 별을 잘 그리도록 충분히 잘 안 내 하지 못했기 때문일지도 모를 일이기 때문이다.
성희승 작가는 일찍부터 2000년대 중반에는 뉴욕을 기반으로 퍼포먼스, 사진, 디지털 회화 작업을 전개 했으며, 미국과 유럽의 여러 전시 공간에서 작품을 발표하고 예술 사회연대 활동을 병행한 전전 후 작가이다.

2003년에는 베니스 비엔날레 기간 중 루마니아 파빌리온에서 퍼포먼스 작업 ‘초대받은/초대받지 않은(invited/uninvited)’을 선보이며 뉴욕과 런던을 중심으로 활동 영역을 한 성희승 작가는 2010년대 초반 런던에서는 ‘올랭피아’ 연작을 중심으로 회화 작업을 발표하며 다양한 예술 활동을 펼쳐왔다.
많은 매스컴과 관계자들의 관심 속에 열린 이번 학고재 전시는 작품마다 『어린 왕자』의 가슴에 새기듯 어른거리는 수많은 별들이 삶의 본질과 가치를 일깨워주면서 삼각형의 넘치는 듯한 형태의 집합으로 반짝거린다.
그러나 그 형상들은 구체적이거나 명료한 형태들로 묘사되기보다는 거대한 은하수처럼 이루어져 있다.
그래서 작가의 그림을 단순히 시각적 형태를 지닌 삼각형의 생김새가 어떠한가? 라며 그녀의 그림을 눈으로만 보아서는 안 된다.
진정 가장 "가장 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않아"서 오로지 마음으로 보아야만 정확하게 볼 수 있는 것일 수도 있다. 바로 그녀의 그림은 그러한 속성을 이미 충분히 숨겨 놓고 화폭에 등장한다.
모든 진실과 본질적인 가치는 시각이 아닌 마음으로 느낄 수 있다는 비밀을 벌써 “여우”가 알려주지 않았는가?

광활한 우주에 끝없이 펼쳐진 작은 별들의 행진, 그 모든 것에 의미를 헤아리기는 불가능하다.
그래서 어쩌면 우리는 그녀의 작품에 길들여져야 할 당위성을 가지며 길들여질 것을 요구한다.
"길들인다는 것" 그것은 누군가를 만나 한없는 인내심을 갖고 서로에게 세상에 단 하나뿐인 특별한 존재가 되어가는 과정이다.
이것이 성희승의 내면 가슴속에서 진지하게 풀어 놓는 은밀한 손짓이며 우리에게 말 걸기이다.
작가는 그 마음을 먼저 주저리주저리 펼쳐 놓는다. 그리고 그러한 내면의 욕망을 곳곳에 숨겨 놓는다. 그래서 혹자는 광활한 삼각형 집합의 그림에서 답답함과 지루함을 가질 수도 있다. 하지만 그 또한
성희승의 솔직함이자 위장술이다.
마치 끝없는 사막이 너무나 아름다운 것은 어딘가에 오아시스를 숨기고 있기 때문인 것처럼 성희승의 매력이다.
이제 우리는 성희승 작가가 그림을 그리는 것에 관한 두 가지의 비밀스러운 의미를 풀어보자, 하나는 그녀의 별 그림을 보고 세상에서 가장 어려운 일은 사람의 "마음을 얻는 일"이다.
왜냐하면. 사람들의 마음은 마치 바람 같아서 변덕이 심하여 붙잡아 두기가 매우 어렵기 때문이다.
또 하나는 그녀의 마음을 별에다 실어 화폭에다 풀어 놓는 기술과 방법이다.
예술가에게 가장 아름답고 숭고한 일은 "기적 같은 만남"이다. 내가 좋아하는 사람이 나를 좋아해 주는 것과 같이 감상자들이 그녀의 별 그림을 좋아하는 것이 바로 작가에게는 가장 성스럽고 아름다운 기적이다.
결국 『어린 왕자』는 전쟁이라는 비극적인 현실 속에서 "잃어버린 순수함"을 되찾고 싶어 했던 작가의 간절한 마음이 담긴 자기 고백서이다.
성희승의 작품 속에 헤아릴 수 없이 떠도는 별들, 은하수처럼 흐르는 별들은 모두 작가의 삶의 격랑의 철학적 깊이가 체득된다.
무엇보다 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것의 별을 구성하는 점과 선, 삼각형의 구조에서 그만의 조형 언어를 발견한다.
그래서 작가는 “우주적 본질은 인간의 감각과 인식 안에서는 한 번에 파악될 수 없다. 나는 이 한계를 전제로, 완전을 향해 나아가는 과정을 ‘되어감’(becoming)이라고 부른다.”
『어린 왕자』는 단순히 작가의 상상력만으로 꾸며진 이야기가 아니라, 작가 생텍쥐페리의 실제 체험과 시대적 상처와 아픔이 그대로 녹여낸 진주 같은 눈물이다.

성희승 작가는 25년 이상 반짝이는 별을 위해, 아니 스타가 되기 위해 은하수 같은 별들의 공간을
사유하고 산책하고 있다.
서울과 뉴욕, 런던을 오가면서 치열하게 바쳐온 별이 되어 가는 과정을 우리는 충분히 잘 알고 있다.
