일본에 거주하는 재일한국인이 보내온 너무나 소중한 자료가 있었다. 한국의 김연자 가수가 일본에서 활동하던 지난 2001년 제52회 NHK 홍백가합전에서 불렀던 임진강(イムジン江) 영상으로 NHK 위성채널(BS2) 재방송 영상으로 추정되었다.
작업을 멈추고 김연자 가수가 일본의 최대 국민 프로그램 NHK 홍백가합전에서 부른 특별한 영상의 자막 작업을 시작하였다.
지난해 연말이었다. 이동식 전 KBS 대기자님이 일본의 재일한국인 엔카 가수 미야코 하루미(都はるみ)가 퇴계 이황 선생으로 대표되는 진성 이 씨 후손이라는 글을 발표한 후 많은 생각을 매만졌다. 가수에 대하여 오랫동안 살펴온 관점에서 분명하게 느껴져 오는 내용이 많았다. 그러나 중요한 사실은 가수 스스로 재일한국인의 후예라는 사실을 분명하게 밝혀 온 점에서 유명 성씨의 후손이라는 문제에 앞서 가수가 아버지의 나라에 대하여 어떤 의식을 품고 있는지가 중요하였다.
바람처럼 스쳐 가는 내용이 있었다. 미야코 하루미 가수가 ‘임진강’이라는 많은 이야기가 있는 노래를 유일하게 불렀던 기억이었다. 이에 가슴으로 듣는 23번째 곡에서 가장 먼저 양희은 가수가 부른 임진강을 소개하였다. 이어 24번째 곡에서 미야코 하루미(都はるみ)가 2000년 12월 도쿄 히비야 공연장에서 유일하게 부른 ‘임진강(イムジン河)’ 공연 영상 자료를 어렵게 확보하여 소개하였다.
미야코 하루미 가수는 1989년 김연자 가수를 프로듀싱하였다. 큰 인기를 얻었던 김연자 가수는 그해 말 제40회 NHK 홍백가합전에 처음 출전하여 ‘아침의 나라에서(朝の国から)’를 불렀다. 이후 1994년 제45회 NHK 홍백가합전에 2번째 출전하여 ‘강물의 흐름처럼(川の流れのように)’을 불렀다. 그리고 7년이 흐른 후 2001년 제52회 NHK 홍백가합전에서 임진강(イムジン江)을 부른 사실은 결코 간단치 않은 많은 이야기가 있다.
필자는 많은 자료를 헤아리면서 당시 ‘임진강(イムジン江)’ 노래가 선곡된 과정에서 우여곡절이 있었으며 다음 해 2002년 한일월드컵 공동 개최에 대한 의의를 설명하여 어렵게 결정된 것으로 확인하였다.
어느 시대에는 말이 역사를 움직이고 어느 시대에는 사건이 사람들의 운명을 바꾸지만 때로는 하나의 노래가 긴 세월 동안 묻혀 있던 기억을 다시 깨우며 역사를 건너는 다리가 되었다.
대표적으로 19세기 초 이탈리아 쌀 농장 노동자들의 노동가에서 탄생한 전통적인 민중의 노래 '벨라 차오(Bella Ciao)'는 독재자 무솔리니 치하에서 가혹한 금지곡으로 틀어막았으나 가슴으로 흐르는 노래가 되어 제2차 세계대전 중에 레지스탕스의 자유를 향한 항전의 노래로 이어졌다.
나아가 1897년 남아프리카 감리교 선교사이며 음악가였던 ‘에노흐 손통가(1873~1905))’가 만들었던 노래 ‘아프리카여, 신이여 우리를 축복하라(Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika)’는 교회 찬송가와 민중의 애창곡이 되어 1920년대 아프리카민족회의(ANC) 공식 집회 곡이었다. 아프리카 공동체 저항 운동을 주도한 노래는 훗날 남아공을 비롯한 잠비아, 탄자니아, 짐바브웨 등 여러 나라의 독립을 주도한 애국가로 남았다.
또한, 폴란드의 금지된 노래들(Forbidden Songs) 중 ‘우리는 아직도 살아남아 있다’라는 뜻을 품은 노래 ‘예슈 노 샹세(Jeszcze pożyjemy)’는 제2차 세계대전 중 나치 독일 점령기와 전후 공산주의 정권 당시 목숨과 맞바꾼 금지곡이었지만 입에서 입으로 전하면서 역사를 바꾸었다.
현대에 들어 통증을 아름다움으로 빚어낸 재즈 가수 빌리 홀리데이(Billie Holiday)가 1939년 발표한 노래 ‘이상한 열매(Strange Fruit)’는 아프리카계 미국인들이 받았던 폭력적인 인종차별의 벽을 부수고 마틴 루서 킹 목사의 비폭력 저항을 부른 인권운동으로 이어졌다.
